Uttarakhand: Nishank resigns, Khanduri to take over as Chief Minister

Uttarakhand: Nishank resigns, Khanduri to take over as Chief Minister

New Delhi:  BC Khanduri will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Uttarkhand today after Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday asked the current incumbent Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank to step down.

The BJP top brass decided to replace Mr Pokhriyal from the top post after he came under a corruption cloud. The party, however, insists that allegations against him are inaccurate and the change has been made keeping in view the next Assembly polls.

Mr Pokhriyal met the Governor shortly after noon today and submitted his resignation. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place at 4 pm today.

"I am a worker of the party and I will go by whatever the party says," Mr Pokhriyal said after tendering his resignation.

Mr Nishank was in Delhi yesterday to attend the National Integration Council (NIC) meeting. He met BJP president Gadkari at his residence. The meeting was also attended by senior BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh, who has now been given special charge of Uttarakhand elections.

Sources had said that Mr Nishank's exit from the chief minister's post was imminent. Sources added that he, however, would be given an opportunity to go gracefully as the party does not want to ruffle any feathers ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections.
